In 1837 a field called Chapel Close off Delph Lane (later Quarry Street) was sold by the farmer for housing. An agricultural labourer bought a parcel of it next to the “proposed road” (later Castle Street), a double plot when compared with neighbouring properties. By the census in 1861, James was living there with his wife, a washerwoman and 6 children. In 1876 he sold the "dwelling house" and land to his son-in-law.
